National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

WRISCO® Encourages You To Learn More About Breast Cancer

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This year, it is estimated that more than 250,000 women in the United States will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer. It is the second leading cause of cancer death in American women and, excluding cancers of the skin, breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in women.

For now, the best way to find breast cancer early — when it’s small and hasn’t spread — is for women to get regular mammograms and to continue to do so as long as they’re in sound health.

The American Cancer Society suggests that women between the ages of 40 and 44 start their breast cancer screening with a mammogram every year. It’s strongly recommended that women from ages 45 to 54 get mammograms every year.

Women age 55 and older should consider getting mammograms every two years or to continue yearly screening. Preventative screening for breast cancer should continue as long as a woman is in good health.

Along with mammograms and exams, women can also take these steps to help lower their risk of breast cancer:

  • Get to and stay at a healthy weight (as recommended by a physician);
  • Stay active with routine exercise; and
  • For those who drink, limit alcohol to no more than one drink a day.

If you or someone you know is facing breast cancer, please know that there are resources available to help every step of the way. The American Cancer Society® offers access to free transportation and lodging when treatment is away from home and can provide one-on-one support from breast cancer survivors who have had similar diagnoses and treatment plans.

The National Breast Cancer Foundation® provides specialized breast health education to improve early detection and partners with corporations to educate employees on how to navigate being a breast cancer survivor in the workplace.

The American Cancer Society also funds and conducts research that helps us better understand, prevent, and find cures for breast cancer – and all cancers. In fact, the American Cancer Society has been a part of many major breast cancer research breakthroughs in recent history.

For more information, visit the American Cancer Society website at cancer.org/breastcancer or call them at 1-800-227-2345.
